The Whappenings Column has been moved to BlogSpot for the remainder of time this site will be hosted with its current provider. Hopefully this will be seamless, but if there are any bugs, let me know. Thanks. [17 May, 2006]

Stop spamming me, Digihell

Today I got this SMS message on my mobile phone:

"Text the letters VIP to 5307 to enter the draw to win tickets to the Bermuda Music Festival. All text entries cost $1. Tickets given away weekly! Digicel"

Well the bright side is that at least I didn't get a phone call from them. However I think I want to check my Terms of Agreement with them to see if I'm liable to receive regular spam from the company that's not a service notification. At least I haven't received a Netherlands Mobile Promo scam recently.

I'm not fond of raffles in the first place, so I'll let them earn their money from everybody else. They can use the cash they get from those who do participate, to improve their service or something.

lime, n. - a social gathering or informal get-together (source: rapdict.com)

This definition won't be found on Merriam-Webster, Oxford or Dictionary.com. If you're from the West Indies, however, you'll recognize it instantly. To some, liming is part of their culture. The phrase is thought to have its origins in Trinidad & Tobago but is now a common term throughout the eastern Caribbean.

Encarta defines liming as "spending time lazily", and unfortunately this definition paints liming in a far too negative light. Is it fair to equate liming with sitting off doing nothing worthwhile? No. Liming is more closely related to going on a family picnic than sitting off on a wall being idle, as far as I am concerned.

More importantly, limes are always about leaving in a more positive frame of mind than when you came in.

That's what we're looking to achieve here. Enjoy, and stay out of trouble.
